THE SAPPHIRES

Saturday, June 27, 2020 - 8:00pm
Lighthouse Theatre
Approximate Duration:
2 hours, 10 minutes including interval

Written and Directed by Tony Briggs

The Sapphires tells the story of the McCrae sisters, four Aboriginal singers from country Victoria, whose biggest dream is to become as famous as their Motown idols. When an unlikely talent scout discovers these four talented singers from a remote Aboriginal mission, they are plucked from obscurity and branded as Australia’s answer to The Supremes. The Sapphires grasp the chance of a lifetime when they’re offered their first real gig – entertaining the troops in Vietnam.

The Sapphires is a funny, heart-warming tale inspired by the true story of four Yorta Yorta Women, who sing classic soul hits against the backdrop of personal change and massive social upheaval.
It is an energetic, fun and engaging play that affirms life and the realisation of dreams.

Writer Tony Briggs has directed this version, which he promises will be the most intimate telling of The Sapphires story yet.

Warnings: Suitable for ages 7+. Some adult themes, simulated warfare and minimal coarse language

“Energetic, passionate, heart wrenching, uplifting, hilarious and engaging.” Anna Locke, Australian Stage
