What is a chamber orchestra? The heart of a chamber orchestra is a group of strings, perhaps accompanied by some wind, brass and percussion. In the nineteenth century, orchestras swelled to the size of modern symphony orchestras, but at the same time composers returned to writing for smaller orchestras and string orchestras,
creating new intimate colours with the musical language of the time.

The Czech tradition of violin playing is celebrated in this program. Perhaps the greatest work of the Romantic string orchestra renaissance, Dvořák’s Serenade, is a beloved showpiece with the attention to detail of the composer’s renowned quartets and the drama of his symphonies. Compatriots Janáček and Suk complete the picture with evocative works full of lush harmonies and folk-inspired inflections.

Heading further east, Glazunov was a Russian contemporary of the other composers in this concert. His Violin Concerto is a dazzling staple of the virtuoso violinist’s repertoire. Ukrainian-Australian
violinist Markiyan Melnychenko joins MCO for this show-stopper in a new arrangement for string orchestra.

Repertoire:
JANÁČEK Suite for String Orchestra JW VI/2
GLAZUNOV Violin Concerto in A minor Op 82 (arr string orchestra Keith Crellin)
SUK Meditation on the Chorale ‘Saint Wenceslas’ Op 35a
DVOŘÁK Serenade for Strings Op 22
