The Exotic Lives of Lola Montez

Tuesday, September 5, 2017 - 8:00pm
Lighthouse Studio
60 minutes, no interval

In 1855 the wildest showgirl Lola Montez toured Australia. The scandal is legend.

From Patrick White Playwright Award winner Jackie Smith and world-famous cabaret stars Finucane & Smith comes the story of one of the world’s most adventurous women.

Lola Montez horse-whipped the editor of the Ballarat Times – for a bad review.

Swung down mineshafts on a single rope with champagne in hand.

Escaped arrest dressed only in her jewels.

Showered with gold nuggets and insults.

Swathed in scandal.

Her erotic Spider Dance was “the most libertinish and indelicate performance that could be given on the public stage (Sydney Morning Herald 1855)

Starring triple Green Room Award winner of Best Actress Miss Caroline Lee (a direct descendant of Lola), who will be joined on stage by Parisian dance siren Holly Durant in a wildly contemporary dreamscape steeped in Australian history.

“There’s really no adequate way of explaining these spectaculars to those yet to witness one, and those who haven’t won’t forget in a hurry…seductive, subversive ad bursting at the seams with monstrous talent" The Age
